Rajasthan Swelters Under Extreme Heat as Traditional Nine-Day Heat Period Begins; Temperatures Near 46°C
Rajasthan faces extreme heat conditions as temperatures near 46°C across major districts including Sri Ganganagar, Bikaner, and Barmer. The Sun’s entry into Rohini marks a traditional nine-day heat phase expected to last until May 28, followed by possible weather changes, storms, and rainfall from late May.
According to astronomical calculations, the Sun will enter the Rohini constellation at 3:37 PM today and remain in the same celestial position until June 8. The initial nine days following the Sun’s entry into Rohini are traditionally identified as a period of extreme heat intensification, during which temperatures are believed to rise significantly due to heightened solar intensity.
Weather changes are anticipated after May 29 with Mercury entering Gemini. From May 30 onward, the possibility of thunderstorms and light rainfall is expected to increase, potentially disrupting the ongoing heat conditions. Meteorological indications suggest that strong winds and scattered rain may lead to a partial weakening of the current heat spell.
This year’s period is marked by a planetary alignment involving Jupiter, Venus, and Mercury positioned in Gemini, forming a triple planetary conjunction. Astrological interpretations suggest that the symbolic positioning of Rohini over the ocean is associated with favorable rainfall patterns, and traditional beliefs regard this phase as the gestational period of the monsoon.
Authorities and experts have advised residents to avoid unnecessary outdoor movement during peak afternoon hours, maintain adequate hydration, and protect themselves from direct sunlight exposure. In addition, acts such as water donation, tree plantation, and providing drinking water to the needy are traditionally regarded as highly meritorious during this period.
Cabinet Minister Jogaram Patel has reviewed the situation and issued directives to officials of the Water Supply Department to ensure adequate drinking water availability. He has also appealed to the public to use water judiciously amid the ongoing severe heat conditions.
The situation underscores the intensity of seasonal extremes in Rajasthan, where both climatic conditions and traditional astronomical interpretations converge to mark a critical phase of extreme heat before the anticipated transition toward pre-monsoon weather activity.
